Goodbye Alister

On 13th September, very sadly one of our founders, Alister Borthwick, died suddenly.

Alister and his wife Verily started the tourism diversification of Deepdale Farm over 30 years ago, with the creation of Deepdale Granary, now the Groups Hostel, and the campsite on two horse paddocks during August.

Without Alister, there wouldn’t be the range of shops, the cafe, the supermarket, the events, the visitor information centre, the hostels or the campsite, and Burnham Deepdale wouldn’t be the hub that it is today.

Anyone staying in or visiting Burnham Deepdale is enjoying the legacy of Alister’s hard work, dedication and passion for this beautiful part of the world.

Alister believed in creating jobs and services for the local community, and we’ve been especially touched by the number of past employees who have been in touch after hearing the sad news.

Although Alister has been less involved in the day to day in recent years, customers, shop keepers, and of course our lovely team, will really miss Alister’s hellos and ‘Is everything under control?’, as he wandered the site, primarily to pick up his paper from the shop.

Our thoughts are with Alister’s wife, sisters, children and grandchildren.

We hope like us, you will raise a glass in his memory.

Alister’s family have suggested that if you’d been thinking of sending flowers, as an alternative please donate to the St Mary’s Church roof appeal or to www.YanaHelp.org
