World War I Centenary Concert, Holkham Hall | Joshua Ellicott, tenor; Paul Janes, piano; Programme: Songs by Bridge, Finzi, Ireland, Poulenc and others including Haydn Wood's Roses of Picardy. | WWI Centenary Concert, Holkham Hall, Joshua Ellicott, tenor; Paul Janes, piano

Joshua Ellicott was born in Manchester and studied Music at York University before continuing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in September 2013 as Don Basilio and took part in an extensive tour performing Monteverdi's Vespers under Emmanuelle Haim. Paul Janes has a busy career as a chamber musician and as a soloist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra with whom he plays regularly. Paul studied at the Royal Northern College of Music where now teaches. The programme will also include readings by Joshua Ellicott of a selection of his Great Uncle Jack's letters written from the front back home to his parents in Lancashire. Joshua was given the entire collection of letters by his grandfather, Harry Ellicott and this moving programme has been added to the Chamber Music at Holkham series to commemorate the Centenary of World War One. Jack Ellicott was born in Lancashire in 1896. He died on 12th August 1916, just a few weeks after arriving on the front. In 1914 he walked to St Helens to volunteer and joined the South Lancashire Regiment, Prince of Wales Volunteers. Jack's Captain wrote to his parents on 16th September 1916 to inform that their son was missing and presumed dead. The recital will vividly bring to life in the most personal manner the experiences encountered by so many families during the Great War.
