An evening of songs by de Falla, Turina, Fauré and others, together with a selection of opera arias
“Her voice has a distinctive timbre with plaintive richness and a youthful bloom.” The New York Times. One of the world's leading sopranos Ailyn Pérez was born in Chicago of Mexican parents. She studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Vocal Arts and at Indiana University. She won the coveted Richard Tucker Award in 2012, joining an illustrious roster of the greatest American singers who have received this award over the past 40 years, including Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, Ruth Ann Swenson, Deborah Voigt and Eric Cutler. She won the 2016 Beverly Sills Artist Award from the Metropolitan Opera and many other important prizes. She made her début at the Metropolitan Opera in 2015 as Micaëla in Carmen, returning this season as Mimi in La bohème.
Ailyn comes to Norfolk between singing Violetta in La traviata at the Staatsoper unter den Linden, Berlin and the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Other highlights include Juliette at the Salzburg Festival and at the Santa Fe Opera, Desdemona at the Houston Grand Opera and Fiordiligi at the Netherlands Opera. At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden she has appeared in La traviata, where The Observer described her as “the ideal Violetta” and as Liu in Turandot. At the Glyndebourne Festival she sang Alice Ford in Falstaff.
Ailyn Perez and Gary Matthewman gave their first recital together in the summer of 2016.
