John Newland Paintings together with Sarah Purvey Ceramics
John Newland was born in Norwich. He attended Norwich Art School, obtaining a National Diploma in Illustration, before joining the Design Department at Jarrold Printing. In 1999 he took early retirement to devote all his time to painting. He has exhibited regularly with Bircham Gallery.
John's landscape paintings are a personal expression of his love of the rural and coastal areas of North Norfolk, but further inspiration has come from travels to Italy and France.
His work conveys immediacy or spontaneity of technique but far from it, for most of his marks and workings are pondered and considered, and sometimes, over a period of time, altered and reworked. He delights in carefully controlled subtleties of colour and tone. The paintings have a contemplative quality, conveying the tranquility and natural beauty of Norfolk's particular light, open skies and gentle landscapes.
‘I like to work emotionally, responding to the seascapes and landscapes of North Norfolk, aiming to convey the atmosphere and essence of the scene. Sometimes a painting develops out of nowhere from constant experimenting with colour and texture – control and chance – I may exaggerate, simplify, and at times, deviate from realism'.
Sarah Purvey's primary discipline is in ceramic sculpture, supported by a strong dynamic drawing and printmaking practice.
“Sarah Purvey creates powerful, sculptural ceramics which combine monumentality and subtlety to unique effect. Her explorations of form, tonality and the possibilities of clay resolve themselves in large, engaging and instinctive vessels”.
-Sophie Cummings, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery Curator 2016
Sarah has had solo exhibitions in St Ives, Amsterdam and Bath and has shown widely in group exhibitions including New York and London. Purvey's work featured in the Threadneedle Prize Exhibition, The Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries, London and The RWA open exhibition Bristol in 2016. Sarah's work is represented by galleries both nationally and internationally.
